Kids are getting cell phones at a younger and younger age. I know my wife and I struggled with the same question for our 7 year old. Seven is a bit young but we got a phone that was also a tracking phone. We always knew where she was and we could always get a hold of her. Now that doesn't mean we let her run around, oh no. But it did mean we felt a little more comfortable letting her walk the six blocks to school and it did eliminate the old "Be home when the street lights are on." (I look back on that and can't tell you how many times I got in trouble because I was INSIDE A HOUSE. LOL.) It also teaches responsibility. After a couple years she graduated to a smartphone and treats it like a champ.
That's our kid, your's might not be the same. The downside to a kid having a phone is that you don't have control over the phone when the child has it. Not anymore. Introducing, Ignore No More. Currently for Android only, cost is $.99
This app will allow the parents to lock the child's phone until the child calls the parent back. The parent can then unlock the phone remotely as well. This app does not prevent the use of 911.
Have questions? Their website has answers. Head over to Ignore No More and give it a whirl. It's only a buck.
