Your phone, after using it, has all your information on it. Emails, photos, music, etc. Then it happens, Google, your manufacturer and your carrier have issued an update. Its exciting to know your about to have some issues dealt with and problems solved all at a push of a button. But wait, sometimes it goes bad and when it does you'll wish you had a new phone.
Step 1. DON'T DOWNLOAD IT, BACK UP YOUR DATA AND PULL OUT YOUR SD CARD.
When you see you have an update coming, DON'T DOWNLOAD IT. The android update was meant for your phone, not necessarily for the apps you've downloaded. So, DON'T DOWNLOAD IT. Instead, take this time to make sure all your data is backed up and off your phone. Your pictures, music, videos, etc. Then pull out your SD card and restart your phone. Then make sure your data is off the phone and somewhere else. Either your computer, cloud storage or whatever.
Step 2. FACTORY RESET THE PHONE.
This ensures you are back to the way the manufacturer had your phone before you added all the data.
Step 3. SET UP THE PHONE WITH NO ACCOUNT INFORMATION.
This might be tricky for some but all you have to do is go through the setup process without putting in an email information or any other account information.
Step 4. CONNECT TO WIFI AND DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE UPDATE.
When the phone is ready to use just connect to WiFi and then check for and download the update you had waiting. Once the update is downloaded then install it. The phone will go through the process, update and then go into the setup once again.
Step 5. SET UP THE PHONE WITH NO ACCOUNT INFORMATION. AGAIN, YES AGAIN.
The magic in this is when you set up the phone again with no account information the operating system gets to set up with nothing extra bogging it down and getting in the way. Once its set up, move to Step 6.
Step 6. FACTORY RESET THE PHONE. AGAIN, YES AGAIN.
You shouldn't have to do this but recently its been noticed that if you do another factory reset the chances of having a bug or something messing up the phone goes down dramatically. The theory is that sometimes the update installation doesn't go so well, but it you do a factory reset after the update things tend to go better. No one knows why for sure so while you shouldn't HAVE to do it, you SHOULD do it anyway. Besides, it only takes another five minutes and it doesn't hurt anything.
Step 7. SET UP THE PHONE WITH NO ACCOUNT INFORMATION.
After the Step 6 factory reset, go ahead and set up your phone WITH NO ACCOUNT information. This allows the phone to set up, and again, no other accounts and information are "getting in the way"
Step 8. ADD YOUR ACCOUNT INFORMATION.
Once set up, then add the email account to your phone and update the apps in the play store that came with the phone. Once that is done add the other email accounts you might have and then shut down the phone. Once shut down, re-install the SD card and restart the phone. Now your data is back in the phone. Then you can start adding the apps you like but I urge you to just add the apps you use the most. This will maximize the performance of your phone.
This process might take a couple hours so putting aside an evening is recommended.
Step 9. ENJOY YOUR NEW UPDATE.
